6-2 System

2 setters on the diagonal — always 3 attackers at the net.

★ DETAIL LEVEL
Match the content depth to your experience.

Philosophy

The 6-2 places 2 setters diagonally opposite each other. In every rotation, one is in the back row (penetrating and distributing) and the other is in the front row (playing as a 3rd attacker, usually on the right side). Result: 3 attackers at the net at all times, versus 2 in a 5-1. It is a demanding system that requires the setters to be versatile (set AND attack), but it maximises the offensive options.

★ PROS
  • 3 attackers at the net in every rotation: constant offensive pressure.
  • No long penetration: the back-row setter stays on the right.
  • Allows specialisation by side (one right-handed and one left-handed setter is ideal).
★ CONS
  • Both setters must be good attackers (right side) — a rare combination.
  • Less stable distribution: 2 different setting styles depending on the rotation.
  • No left-side attack by the setter; too predictable on the right side.

The 6 rotations

Rotation R1

Back-row penetration

Setter 1 in the back row in P1, 2nd setter in the front row in P4 — attacking like an OH.

Attacker: OH2 · Tempo 2
Beginner
Strengths: 3 attackers at the net (the 2nd setter attacks from P4 + middle + right side). The back-row setter's penetration is short (from P1). Weaknesses: the 2nd setter in P4 must be able to attack a high ball — technically demanding.
Intermediate
Setter 1 (P1) must stay behind P2 and to the right of P6. The 2nd setter (P4) must stay in front of P5 and to the left of P3. No opposite to manage (the setters take the right-side/left-side attacking roles depending on the rotation).
Intermediate
Short penetration: setter 1 leaves P1 and runs up toward the target (between P2 and P3). Distance comparable to R1 of the 5-1. The 2nd setter stays at the net and switches to attacking after the distribution.

Rotation R2

Back-row penetration

Setter 1 always in the back row (P6), 2nd setter in the front row in P3 — quick attack or right side.

Left side (P4)MED

Centre attack (attacking setter)MED
Attacker: S2 · Tempo 2
Centre quick (1st tempo)LOW
Attacker: MB2 · Tempo 1
Beginner
Strengths: short penetration from the centre, 3 attackers at the net. The 2nd setter in P3 can run a centre quick or switch to the right side. Weaknesses: the 2nd setter has to choose quickly between quick and outside — reading the opposing block is crucial.
Intermediate
Setter 1 (P6) must stay behind P3 and between P5 and P1. The 2nd setter (P3) at the centre of the net must stay between P4 and P2 and in front of P6. Symmetrical set-up, easy to hold.
Intermediate
The shortest penetration in the system: straight line from back centre. The 2nd setter stays in P3 and attacks or switches depending on the chosen option. Minimal movement for both setters.

Rotation R3

Back-row penetration

Setter 1 in the back row in P5, 2nd setter in the front row in P2 — the most offensive 6-2 rotation.

Centre quick (1st tempo)LOW
Attacker: MB2 · Tempo 1
Left side (P4)MED
Attacker: OH2 · Tempo 2
Beginner
Strengths: 3 attackers at the net, the 2nd setter attacks on the right side (their natural zone) — the most stable option. Weaknesses: long penetration by setter 1 (from P5 to the right-hand target) — requires an early start.
Intermediate
Setter 1 (P5) must stay to the left of P6 and behind P4. The 2nd setter (P2) at the right of the net must stay in front of P1 and to the right of P3. Set-up where the 2nd setter is in a natural attacking position.
Intermediate
Long penetration (from P5): diagonal path toward the right-hand target. Must start early or be late. The 2nd setter in P2 attacks without moving — their target is right in front of them.

Rotation R4

Back-row penetration

2nd setter in the back row in P1, setter 1 in the front row in P4 — the roles are reversed.

Beginner
Strengths: the 2nd setter takes over the distribution (twin of R1 but with the roles reversed). 3 attackers at the net. Setter 1 attacks from P4. Weaknesses: if the 2 setters have very different styles, the team has to adapt — a tactical transition moment.
Intermediate
Same as R1 but with the roles reversed: 2nd setter (P1) behind P2 and to the right of P6; setter 1 (P4) in front of P5 and to the left of P3.
Intermediate
Short penetration by the 2nd setter (from P1). Setter 1 attacks from P4 like an OH. Full swap of responsibilities.

Rotation R5

Back-row penetration

2nd setter in the back row in P6, setter 1 in the front row in P3 — central penetration.

Left side (P4)MED
Attacker: OH2 · Tempo 2
Centre attack (attacking setter)MED
Attacker: S · Tempo 2
Centre quick (1st tempo)LOW
Attacker: MB1 · Tempo 1
Beginner
Strengths: the shortest penetration (back centre), 3 attackers at the net. Setter 1 in P3 can run a quick or go outside. Weaknesses: setter 1 has to be even more versatile — playing at the centre of the net is technically demanding.
Intermediate
2nd setter (P6) behind P3 and between P5 and P1. Setter 1 (P3) at the centre of the net — strict overlap, between P4 and P2 and in front of P6.
Intermediate
The shortest penetration in the system — straight line from P6. Setter 1 stays in P3 and attacks the centre or switches to P2.

Rotation R6

Back-row penetration

2nd setter in the back row in P5, setter 1 in the front row in P2 — natural right-side attack.

Beginner
Strengths: setter 1 attacks in their natural zone (P2). 3 attackers at the net. Weaknesses: long penetration by the 2nd setter (from P5) — equivalent to R3 but reversed.
Intermediate
Same as R3 but reversed. 2nd setter (P5) to the left of P6 and behind P4. Setter 1 (P2) in front of P1 and to the right of P3.
Intermediate
Long diagonal penetration by the 2nd setter. Setter 1 attacks from P2 without moving.
