4v4 — 3-1 Line

3 attackers at the net + penetrating setter — the most offensive 4v4 formation.

★ DETAIL LEVEL
Match the content depth to your experience.

Philosophy

The "3-1 Line" takes the principle of the 6v6 5-1: a single back-row setter who penetrates, 3 attackers at the net. It is the most offensive 4v4 formation — but it demands very clean reception and a fast setter. Ideal as a transition to 6v6.

★ PROS
  • 3 attackers at the net — constant offensive pressure.
  • Centre quick available (1st tempo).
  • Ideal preparation for 6v6.
★ CONS
  • Demands good reception and a fast setter.
  • Only 1 defender after penetration (the setter).
  • Too complex for beginners.

Beginner
The single setter in the back right (P1) penetrates as soon as the ball is hit, toward zone 2. This frees 3 attackers in front: left side, middle, right side (often an opposite). Simplified equivalent of the 6v6 5-1 — demanding on reception and setter speed, but the most offensive of the 3 4v4 systems.
Intermediate
Typical defence: system A (1 central blocker + 3 defenders). The middle stays at the net to block, the 2 wings drop to the 3 m line, the setter gets back to the back right to defend the short diagonal.
