POSITIONS — 4V4

Positions and tactical systems for 4 vs 4 volleyball.

1. GAME FORMAT
No official FIVB regulation. Played in US university intramurals, recreational tournaments, educational transition (FFVb, Volleyball Canada).
9×9 m court (sometimes reduced), 3 touches, blocking allowed, clockwise rotation. 2 front + 2 back at every rotation. Common formations: diamond (1-2-1 center setter), 3-1 line (penetrating setter), 2-2 box. Some organizers waive overlap faults (Texas A&M).
2. TACTICAL SETUP
3-1 line (penetrating setter)

"3-1 line" formation: sole setter at P1 (back) who penetrates to zone 2 as soon as the ball is hit. Frees 3 attackers in front — a simplified equivalent of 6v6 5-1. Requires very clean reception and a fast setter. Defense: A system possible (1 central blocker + 3 defenders).
