POSITIONS — 4V4

Positions and tactical systems for 4 vs 4 volleyball.

1. GAME FORMAT
No official FIVB regulation. Played in US university intramurals, recreational tournaments, educational transition (FFVb, Volleyball Canada).
9×9 m court (sometimes reduced), 3 touches, blocking allowed, clockwise rotation. 2 front + 2 back at every rotation. Common formations: diamond (1-2-1 center setter), 3-1 line (penetrating setter), 2-2 box. Some organizers waive overlap faults (Texas A&M).
2. TACTICAL SETUP
Diamond (1-2-1)

"Diamond" formation: the MOST USED in indoor 4v4. 1 player at the center net (P3, often the setter), 2 wings mid-court (P4 and P2 around the 3 m line), 1 back. Typical defense: A-system (1 blocker + 3 defenders). Most vulnerable zone: long cross-court (lack of bodies in the back).
