2 at the net + 2 in the back — for a double block against powerful attacks.

★ DETAIL LEVEL
Match the content depth to your experience.

Philosophy

The "Box" places 2 players at the net and 2 in the back, forming a square. It allows a double block on the opposing attack — useful against very powerful hitters. But with only 2 defenders at the back, it is riskier than the Diamond.

★ PROS
  • Double block possible — effective defence against power hitters.
  • 2 attackers directly available at the net.
  • Symmetrical set-up that is easy to memorise.
★ CONS
  • Only 2 defenders at the back — the tip is not covered.
  • No central short coverage.
  • Requires players who are versatile in attack and defence.

Formation

"Box" 2-2: 2 attackers at the net + 2 back-row defenders. Allows the double block.

Beginner
2 players at the net (P4 and P2) + 2 in the back (P5 and P1). The setter is often one of the two back-row players, penetrating from the back left. Allows a double block on the opposing attack — useful against powerful hitters. But with only 2 defenders at the back, the tip is poorly covered.
Intermediate
Typical defence: system B (2 blockers + 2 defenders). Use only against powerful hitters without finesse. The 2 wings at the net block together, the 2 back-row players defend the diagonals. Vulnerable to short fakes.
