4-2 System

The simplest — 2 front-row setters who distribute without penetrating.

★ DETAIL LEVEL
Match the content depth to your experience.

Philosophy

The 4-2 uses 2 setters on the diagonal. In every rotation, the FRONT-row setter takes the 2nd contact and distributes — no penetration! It is the easiest system to learn: no complex setter movement, just 2 attackers at the net. Ideal for beginners, schools and recreational play.

★ PROS
  • No penetration — the front-row setter takes the ball in place.
  • Simplest system: 2 versatile setters are enough.
  • Excellent for learning rotations without tactical complexity.
★ CONS
  • Only 2 attackers at the net: less offensive, the opposing block anticipates.
  • The setter cannot attack (they distribute): 1 player is "lost" in attack.
  • No pipe traditionally — limited offensive options.

The 6 rotations

Rotation R1

Setter at the net

2nd setter (S2) in the front row in P4 — they distribute. 2 attackers: MB1 quick + OH1 outside.

Highlight:

Attack options

Centre quick (1st tempo)LOW
Attacker: MB1 · Tempo 1
Left side (P4)MED
Attacker: OH1 · Tempo 2
Beginner
Strengths: the most stable 4-2 rotation. The 2nd setter is already at the net on the left and takes the 2nd contact without moving. Weaknesses: only 2 attackers (the middle and the outside hitter) — the opposing block anticipates easily.
Intermediate
The 2nd setter (P4) at the left of the net must stay in front of P5 and to the left of P3. Setter 1 (P1) in the back row stays a defender — they do not take part in the attack.
Intermediate
No movement: the 2nd setter takes the pass in place. This is the main difference from the 6-2 — no penetration, no run.

Rotation R2

Setter at the net

2nd setter in P3 (centre of the net) — they distribute. MB2 quick on the right + OH1 on the left side.

Highlight:

Attack options

Left side (P4)MED
Attacker: OH1 · Tempo 2
Centre quick (1st tempo)LOW
Attacker: MB2 · Tempo 1
Beginner
Strengths: the 2nd setter in the centre sees the whole court. 2 attackers: MB2 (in P4, who switches) and OH1 (in P2). Weaknesses: the middle has to switch to the left side to attack — not their natural zone.
Intermediate
The 2nd setter (P3) at the centre of the net must stay between P4 and P2 and in front of P6. Strict overlap but no difficulty since there is no movement.
Intermediate
No movement. The 2nd setter takes the 2nd contact at the centre of the net and distributes to the left (MB2) or the right (OH1).

Rotation R3

Setter at the net

2nd setter in P2 (right of the net) — they distribute. MB2 quick + OH2 on the left side.

Highlight:

Attack options

Centre quick (1st tempo)LOW
Attacker: MB2 · Tempo 1
Left side (P4)MED
Attacker: OH2 · Tempo 2
Beginner
Strengths: the 2nd setter is on the right, a natural position. 2 attackers: MB2 in the centre + OH2 on the left. Weaknesses: no threat on the right side (the setter does not hit).
Intermediate
The 2nd setter (P2) must stay in front of P1 and to the right of P3. Natural position, easy overlap.
Intermediate
No movement. The 2nd setter takes the ball at the right of the net and distributes to the left.

Rotation R4

Setter at the net

Setter 1 (S) in the front row in P4 — they distribute (the roles are reversed). MB1 quick + OH2 on the right side.

Highlight:

Attack options

Centre quick (1st tempo)LOW
Attacker: MB2 · Tempo 1
Right side (P2)MED
Attacker: OH2 · Tempo 2
Beginner
Strengths: it is now setter 1's turn to distribute. Same principles as R1 but with the roles reversed. Weaknesses: mental transition — the team has to adapt to the new distributor's style.
Intermediate
Setter 1 (P4) at the left of the net must stay in front of P5 and to the left of P3. The 2nd setter (P1) in the back row plays as a defender only.
Intermediate
No movement. Setter 1 takes the ball in place in P4.

Rotation R5

Setter at the net

Setter 1 in P3 (centre of the net) — they distribute. MB1 quick on the right + OH2 on the left side.

Highlight:

Attack options

Right side (P2)MED
Attacker: OH2 · Tempo 2
Centre quick (1st tempo)LOW
Attacker: MB1 · Tempo 1
Beginner
Strengths: setter 1 in the centre sees everything. 2 attackers. Weaknesses: the middle has to switch to the right side to attack.
Intermediate
Setter 1 (P3) must stay between P4 and P2 and in front of P6. Strict overlap.
Intermediate
No movement. Setter 1 takes the ball in the centre and distributes.

Rotation R6

Setter at the net

Setter 1 in P2 (right of the net) — they distribute. MB1 quick + OH1 on the left side.

Highlight:

Attack options

Centre quick (1st tempo)LOW
Attacker: MB1 · Tempo 1
Right side (P2)MED
Attacker: OH1 · Tempo 2
Beginner
Strengths: setter 1 is on the right, a natural position. Same principles as R3 but reversed. Weaknesses: very predictable, distribution to the left only.
Intermediate
Setter 1 (P2) must stay in front of P1 and to the right of P3.
Intermediate
No movement. Setter 1 takes the ball on the right and distributes.
