Setter guide

Hand triangle, footwork and distribution decisions

★ GOLDEN RULE

THE OPPOSING BLOCK READS YOUR FEET — NOT YOUR HANDS

A setter who adjusts their feet BEFORE contact can distribute to 3 options without giving the block any clue. A setter who turns the torso in the air is easy to read and gets blocked.

Hands and triangle

Hand shape determines accuracy. 4 points to drill against a wall before any team training.

Triangle

Thumbs and index fingers form a triangular window just above the forehead. The ball enters through that window — not through the palms.

Spread fingers

The pads of all 10 fingers touch the ball, not the palm. Light tension, as if you were holding a basketball.

Open elbows

Elbows out and up. If your elbows point forward, your set will fall short.

Finish

Arms extended at the end, thumbs pointing at the target. The ball leaves the hands above the forehead, not in front of it.

Footwork — the setter's steps

Feet turn first, hands second. The ideal motion finishes on the right foot (right-handed) with the weight transferred toward the target.

1

Step 1 — left: dynamic move toward the ball's expected landing zone.

2

Step 2 — right: adjustment, the right foot arrives under the ball.

3

Finish on the right foot: weight transfers from left to right during contact, never the other way around.

4

Nose under the ball before contact — if you can see your triangle, the ball is too far in front.

Distribution decisions

Reception quality determines your options. The more accurate the pass, the more you can vary the tempos.

Perfect pass (3 m from the net)

3 active options: quick (MB), 2nd tempo (OH), back set (OPP). Choose based on the opposing block.

Decent pass (3-5 m)

2 options: OH in zone 4 (high set) or OPP in zone 2. The quick is no longer playable.

Difficult pass (> 5 m or off target)

Safety set — high ball to zone 4. The goal is no longer to surprise, it is to keep the attack alive.

On a pass at the net

Jump set or bump set (forearm pass). No standing overhead set — you would be called for a net fault.

Wall Setting to a Target

⏱ 5-10 min👥 1+🏐 1 ball, 1 wall, masking tape📐 4v4 · 5v5 · 6v6
Goal

Build the hand triangle and repeat the same contact point on a fixed target.

Level variants
BEG30x30 cm target marked on the wall at antenna height. 10 consecutive sets, at least 7 on target.
INTAlternate high sets (third tempo) and low sets (second tempo) on two separate targets.
ADVOn a signal, set backward (push the hips through, finish overhead). Target 1 m behind you.
Success criteria
  • 7 of 10 sets on target
  • Hand triangle visible BEFORE contact
  • Feet always under the hips (no uncontrolled backward lean)

Move, Stop, Set

⏱ 10-12 min👥 3+🏐 2 balls, 3 cones, 1 hitting target (hoop)📐 4v4 · 5v5 · 6v6
Goal

Learn to stop and square the shoulders to the target BEFORE contact.

Level variants
BEGThe setter starts at a cone, runs 2 m to a tossed ball, stops and sets to the target.
INTThe tosser varies where the ball lands (left / right / short / deep). The setter adjusts their steps.
ADVAdd a constraint: at most 2 ground contacts between the end of the run and the set (dynamic balance).
Success criteria
  • 6 of 8 sets land in the outside zone (4)
  • Nose behind the ball at contact
  • Full stop BEFORE contact

Setting on the Move Laterally

⏱ 10 min👥 3+🏐 3 balls📐 4v4 · 5v5 · 6v6
Goal

Keep setting accurate when the pass forces a long lateral move (more than 2 m).

Level variants
INTThe tosser sends 5 balls 2 m away from the setter's position. Set to zone 4 every time.
INTAdd a back set to zone 2 (alternate front and back).
ADVA moving hitter target: call "Hut!" or "Go!" out loud before the set.
Success criteria
  • 4 of 5 sets within a 1.5 m circle
  • Feet turned to the target BEFORE the hands
  • No twisting of the torso in the air
Coaching cues

“Feet turn first”
