Side-out, coverage, transitions and communication

★ GOLDEN RULE

COVER EVERY ATTACK — NO EXCEPTIONS

An attacker who knows the team has their back dares more. A team that does not cover loses 30% of its blocked attacks on balls that could have been recovered.

The 3 phases of the game

Every point goes through 1, 2 or 3 of these phases. Team play means chaining them without dead time, knowing where to be and when.

Phase 1 — Side-out (reception)
  • R-S-A: reception → set → attack, with no transition.
  • Immediate coverage of the attacker by 3 players in a triangle.
  • Goal: score or force a free ball from the opponent.
Phase 2 — Defense / block
  • Block + back row: 2-3 blockers + 3 defenders covering the angles.
  • Continuous communication: "line", "diag", "tip".
  • If the defense is clean → follow with a quick attack in transition.
Phase 3 — Transition
  • The hardest phase: every player is already committed elsewhere.
  • The setter must anticipate their run to the net as soon as the defense starts.
  • Attackers restart their approach from any position.

Triangle coverage

Every attack must trigger 3 players into coverage. By the time the ball is blocked and comes back to your side, it is too late to react.

Coverage triangle

3 players 2 m from the attacker: setter on the line side, libero/back-row player on the diagonal side, opposite (or non-attacking OH) behind.

Distance

Too close = the ball flies over you, too far = no time to defend. 2 m is the sweet spot.

Posture

Low, platform ready. The covered ball arrives fast and low (block rebound).

Classic mistake

Players watching their attacker hit — they are not ready for coverage. Eyes on the opposing block.

Communication

A silent team loses balls to double calls (two players go for the same ball) or "drops" (nobody goes). Talking is not optional.

Before the serve : Call the server's zone ("zone 1", "zone 5"). Call defensive roles ("I free 2", "you take line").
During reception : "Mine!" / "Yours!" — the first to call takes it. No double call on the same ball.
On the opposing attack : "Tip!" for a short feint, "Out!" for a ball going out. Nobody defends an out.
After the point : Quick reset — 1 sentence to correct or praise. No long discussion that breaks the tempo.
